Social media word of mouth is the greatest marketing and advertising tool. Period.

No matter what, if you have good content then you have the power to create something special; without even lifting a finger. The great thing about social media is that its users know a piece of good content and will create multiple strands of media from that content to sit on multiple platforms.

In this vlog, I speak about the recent events that has happened with United Airlines’ mishandling of a passenger and Borussia Dortmund’s team bus incident.

In the case of United Airlines, an unfortunate turn of events involving a passenger and airline staff resulting in the passenger being dragged off the plane by police officers. Fortunately, the event was recorded on mobile devices by passengers who uploaded their videos to social media. Of course, this created an uproar of emotion but what it also created was an opportunity for everyday social media content creators to act and use this event to create entertaining content which in turn made this event that much more visible to the public.

The amount of extra eye balls that this type of social media word of mouth added would have indeed been a number above comprehension. United Airlines certainly felt the impact of what social media can do and how it can ‘make’ or ‘break’ you.

With Borussia Dortmund, the use of the hashtag #BedForAwayFans was created by the club as well as its fans to help find Monaco fans a bed to sleep in for the extra night that the French fans stayed in Dortmund to support their team due to the match being postponed. This is by no means nothing new but the use of the hashtag created positive social media word of mouth to allow football fans to come together as one.

Whether for entertainment or for help or for anything else. If there is a good cause, good content or a good idea, people will use social media to share it, talk about it and promote it.

It is the very best form of marketing and advertising. Just don’t ask people to do it. Let them do it themselves!

Are we learning or regurgitating?

Why is it that in the typical school system we group students in ‘intelligence’ categories based on how well they do on a test? Is it correct to put a child in group ‘A’ because they produced a high score due to their ability to remember something that they have been told by their teacher? Is it correct to put a child in group ‘C’ due to their inability to remember something that they have been told by their teacher. Is the child in group ‘A’ more intelligent than the child in group ‘C’? Or are we praising that child because of their commitment to studying?

What is the correct way to measure intelligence? When we think about the amount of media consumption formats that are available to us and the amount we use at once, is it possible anymore to focus on one thing at a time and give that topic your undivided attention? Right now, as I write this article. I have Microsoft word open on my laptop, my work phone which is on the floor buzzes every time I get a message from a colleague on Slack (which is very often). Whatsapp never fails to make me aware when someone wants my attention on my personal phone which is on the sofa to the right of me. My tablet which is also on the sofa but to the left, although currently closed vibrates to let me know when I have a new email and BBC News which is on TV is telling me the latest score updates from the Champions League. I know I have the complete ability to remove all of these distractions to fully focus on writing this piece and will most likely end up with a better article if these distractions were not around but the real question is… Do I want to remove these distractions?


Me, like most young people feel the need to always be connected for better or for worse. Because of this, do we ever get to learn, understand or focus on what we are doing or will we forever remember things what we have heard, read or watched without having used our ability to make decisions for ourselves due to the many media distractions around us.

We may be losing the ability to focus and make decisions on topics for ourselves, resulting to simply relying on our ability to remember and then regurgitate what we’ve heard, read or watched. Does this make us intelligent? Has the influx of media consumptions formats diminished our thinking capabilities?

What would happen if the internet shut down for a day?

The internet has become a way of life for almost everyone in the western and developed world. Most people use the internet daily and although there was indeed a time when the internet did not exist. It is now incredibly difficult to think or even live in a world where there was no internet.

With the way the world-wide web and all its assets are used today, if the internet were to disappear for a 24-hour period, it would cause extreme havoc and dismay amongst the general public. Massive global, technological conglomerates would shut down, causing the way we go about daily routines to be rethought. If the likes of Google, Facebook and Amazon disappeared for a day, how would we react? Sure, we would deal with it but how would we deal with it and what questions would arise about our reliability on the internet?

How would the 15 year old Californian, high school girl live her life without being able to go on Snapchat? Today’s world suggests that she would waste away into thin air…

Will our children’s, children’s, children require intimate human interaction and companionship?

It’s hard to believe that several generations down the line of present day won’t require human companionship the way we do today. In some instances, it becomes difficult to wrap our heads around the idea that going out with friends on a Friday afternoon after work to grab a few drinks won’t exist. Or having a general face-to-face catch up with good friends will simply always result to a mode of communication through technology.

In a way, humans will always need the companionship of other humans at least for the purpose of reproduction. But thinks again, do we actually need ‘companionship’ to create other beings, no… We don’t!

The way young people use their mobile devices today is a very obvious example of the direction that mobile technology and technology in general is moving. Who’s to say that in one hundred years from now, Rebecca and Jill will be communicating by hologram devices instead of meeting at each other’s houses to gossip?

There used to be a time when you had to physically talk to someone in front of their face in order to communicate with them. Now, all we need to do is pick up a phone. The more we develop as a race and create new ways of talking to one another, the less actual human physical interaction we’ll need. We will no longer need that level of intimate human interaction or companionship.

Yes, communicating with a friend in any circumstance or by any means is still companionship but compare this companionship to what we have today. Now ask yourself this question… What comes next after holograms?

Are video games a reality?

Video games have become a way of life for many people; young and old. They become so engrossed into digital entertainment that it has turned into a form of reality that is becoming increasingly difficult to step away from.

With the advancement in video game play and the tools that have allowed video gaming to become more ‘realistic’, we are now living in an age that can literally put us into games.

Take VR for example, a tool that allows people to live within a simulation or an event, or a game. This is the beginning of a world where we will no longer rely on the control pad to control our sword-wielding character but yet we will soon be able to use actions and thoughts to defeat the flame throwing nemesis that confronts us.

We live in a time where Egaming has blown up on a massive scale with a large influx of money that has been pumped into the industry. This has attracted a wave of gamers with a hunger to ‘make it big’, knowing that they have potential for fame and riches. In some territories across the world, especially South East Asia, it is not uncommon for gamers to where diapers while gaming. Why? So that they don’t lose points while taking a bathroom break. It is also not uncommon for these gamers to be fed while playing. Why? For the same reason.

These video games have now become a reality.

But there are two stories here and I want to ask the same question again. This time, with a twist.

Michio Kaku is an American theoretical physicist who has a lot to do with the way I think about things. He once questioned human life as potentially a ‘simulation.’ Think about that for a second.

Us humans have even created a video game that goes by the name of… ‘The Sims.’ A game where you can create humans inside of a simulation… I want to end by asking you one final question.

Why can’t we humans also be living in a simulation, being controlled by external beings?

Are you in control of your phone or is your phone in control of you?

This is not just about addiction. This is about personal preference, enjoyment and yet again, generational values.

A mobile phone is an essential piece of hardware that is almost a must have for most people living in the western world. How many people know days have access to a 3G or 4G cellular mobile device that allows them to connect with anyone around the world? The answer is a A LOT of people.

When a device is so accessible and can do the above, then it becomes very difficult to not become a serial user of it.

But how do people control the amount they use it? Or is it even a major issue to people?

I for one am a complete addict when it comes to the need of my mobile device. It has become a necessity in my life as I’m sure it has for many other people.

I, as many other young people use it to not only connect with the world around me but also use it for countless hours of entertainment through the art of ‘scrolling’. Yes, ‘scrolling.’

Are these hours wasted or are these hours used spent ‘scrolling’ up and down Facebook and Instagram timelines on a mobile phone useful to your growth as a person?

For me, it brings out a sense of joy and happiness. I’m able to laugh and share these moments with friends and family. It allows me to start up conversation. It allows me to debate. It allows me to laugh and smile. Yes, these are all things that can be done without a phone, but what is the difference? Or is there even a difference?

It has long been debated that ‘real’ human interaction should not be disregarded for virtual human interaction but in a day where virtual reality is on the rise then should this really be the case?

There will be a day where your phone will begin to control you. For some people, this day may have come already. For others, this day is coming soon and for a few, this day will never come. Humans are not only getting smarter; we’re getting smarter faster.

Just remember that with all these smarts… We’re still the ones that have decided to forgo in the direction of virtual reality advancement. If we didn’t want our mobile phones to control us then they simply wouldn’t.

Is University really worth it?

What’s the point of going to University?

I’ve had this conversation with a lot of people over the years and it’s always been a topic that brings out the argumentative nature in me.

Not because I am determined to prove my point, but because It’s a subject that I feel extremely passionate about.

For various reasons, I think making the choice to attend university is one of the best choices one person could make in their lives. I also think that making the choice not to go to university is one of the best choices you could make in your life, depending on what you choose to do with your time.

In the UK, employers care about one thing in particular that far outweighs any other qualities that a candidate may have… Work experience!

Ask yourself this question.

There is a job being advertised for Marine Amphibian Conservation Analyst in Plymouth.

Applicant 1 is a first class degree holder in Wildlife Conservation from the University of Kent, specialising in Marine Amphibians.

Applicant 2 spent one year in at Bournemouth University studying Animal Biology. However, he/she dropped out and has since gained two years working for London Zoo’s Marine Conservation Analytical team. For their first year, they volunteered, for their second year they started to get paid.

Who typically gets the job?

I loved my time at University, I was able to connect with people I wouldn’t usually connect with. Learn from industry professionals, meet friends for life and be involved in all kinds of campus activities that helped shape who I am today.

But did any of that help me get a job? Or was it the countless hours of volunteering for work experience that was able to get my media internship? Was it then my experience and knowledge at my internship that helped me get my first job out of uni? Was it the experience from my first job out of uni that helped me get my current job?

I believe it was.

I love and will always love my university and the people I met, it was them that put me on a platform that made me realise what had to be done to succeed. But do you really need a first class degree or even a 2:1 to be who you want to be and do you what you want to do?

No you don’t.

Do you need work experience to be who you want to be and do you what you want to do?

No you don’t.

But taking a diversional route and seeking opportunities outside of the norm, not being afraid to be different and challenging the world will allow you to be who you want to be and do you what you want to do.

Be Yourself and Let Your Creativity Shine

Many people spend over one third of their day in a working environment, one third of their day outside of a working environment i.e. socialising and one third of their day sleeping or resting.

Of course, this statistic is not related to everybody or even most people but it relates to a number of people who have taking it upon themselves to work within a professional environment.

I challenge those people to ask themselves a question… Do you feel comfortable in your environment? Very broad question, I know. But let’s take a deeper look into the veins of what I am asking.

Do you feel comfortable in your work attire?

Is there a certain way you would do your hair for work?

Do you talk differently at work?

Do you walk differently at work?

I could go on for eternity but by now you should understand where I am going… If the following is the case – why is your Facebook profile and cover image different from your LinkedIn profile and cover image?

I ask you two more questions:

If you could describe your Facebook profile image in two words, what would they be?

If you could describe your LinkedIn profile image in two words, what would they be?

In today’s world, people want to see creativity, they want to see who YOU are – and this is what makes people attractive to the world, to other people, but also to world of work and businesses.

Don’t let something/a company/a business hold you back from living and working comfortably; because this is what will bring out the most in you.

Social Media and Generational Values

Why do certain people have a problem with the way young people attach themselves to their mobile devices and their use of social media?

Different generations of people value and utilise social media in unique and various ways, it’s important to remember this.

In today’s world, it is vital to understand that children are raised and grow up in a very different environment compared to that of 20/30 years ago.

They are exposed to a variety of nuances that help them understand and adapt to the world in a way that is digestible and understandable to them.

Digital and social media is a tool for learning and news gathering as much as it is for social related, friendship activities.

These young people will be the future CEOs and owners of companies that will be at the forefront of technology, digital and social media.

Let them use it, learn it, and build it.

The Immense Power of Internet Memes

Everybody loves to be entertained. There is no one person on this planet that does not enjoy a ‘good old chuckle.’

As generations go by and people start to urge for their ‘fix’ of entertainment and laughter – we start to see a curtain being lifted on extremism and what people will do to get their enjoyment.

People like change, people like to want to “see what happens.”

I’ve heard people say: “I voted for Trump to shake things up a bit”, “I voted Brexit just because.”

This is the culture that many young people live in today. Sometimes it can be for the worse, sometimes it can be for the better.

We live in a meme culture, whereby what we see online, on our Instagram feeds, on our Facebook timeline, etc, dictates the way we feel about certain topics.

Think to yourself for a minute.

How many Trump memes did we see during his US presidential campaign?

Now think to yourself again.

How many Clinton memes did you see during her US presidential campaign?

Entertainment through memes and other types of internet influences creates a new wave of pop culture that in-turn is directly, but mostly indirectly used as a marketing ploy.

From my personal experience, Donald Trump was the one that was continuously ridiculed and ‘laughed at’ through memes on my social media timelines… I rarely saw a Hilary Clinton meme.

People were able to make fun of Trump and laugh at Trump. Over time, this would have had people think:

“Wouldn’t it be funny if he actually became the 45th President of the United States of America?”

“Maybe I should vote for him to see what he does?” “Maybe I should vote for him to see what happens?”

The current US President was so heavily marketed in a way through memes and pop culture that he was always talked about and always in our line of sight without us knowing that he was being sold to us.

Of course, what we saw of Mr Trump in the media spotlight was not always a shining, glamorous example of what a leader of any nation should resemble.


Publicity, no matter if it’s bad publicity – is always publicity.

That being said, meme culture has created a pathway for brands and companies to start to market their products and create content that can entice their younger, more ‘connected’ audience.

The power of a good meme should not be underestimated. It has the ability to enhance the ordinary into the extraordinary. Just ask the US President.

So… How can brands use memes to turn products viral?

That is the skills we all need to master.
